Each region of the southwestern state offers something different for travelers, providing more than enough options. The Central Region, also known as the “Heart of New Mexico”, contains most of the state’s population and encompasses Albuquerque, the state’s largest city. A great sight to see every October in Albuquerque is the International Balloon Fiesta, a colorful event showcasing a large number of gorgeous, and authentic hot air balloons. To get a great view of the New Mexico countryside check out the Sandia Peak Tramway, which provides a scenic ride through the Sandia Mountains. The mountains also host a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, backpacking, and skiing in the wintertime.
In the Northern part of the state, travelers can visit Indian country which holds great Native American culture. There are a number of state and national parks which feature histories of the ancient Anasazi people and various tribes. In Northeast New Mexico, travelers can witness how the Sangre de Cristo Mountains turn into rolling plains and also take in the history of the Santa Fe Trail. The Southern part of the state provides visitors with a true “Old West” experience boasting great wilderness and history. This region is known as “Billy the Kid Country” as it houses tracings of the historic outlaw. Southern New Mexico is also home to some local “must-sees”, including the Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Monument. Popular cities to visit in southern New Mexico are Las Cruces and Roswell, known for its UFO incident. With all of the varying landscapes and historical sites, New Mexico is a must-visit for RV owners.
