Geocaching is a fun, family-friendly activity that is taking the RVing community by storm. This exciting new trend is essentially a high-tech treasure hunt, which incorporates your portable GPS or internet-friendly cell phone, the great outdoors, and a connection to the human community. Anyone is welcome to start a geocache or small container–a water bottle, tupperware container, coffee can, etc–which contains a log book and often small tokens or gifts. The container is then placed in a secret location, and the coordinates are posted on www.geocaching.com. The post can also highlight riddles or clues of where to find the container, as the coordinates are only promised to get you close to the geocache–you’ll need to use your imagination and sense of adventure to find the exact hiding place! Once you’ve located the container you can log your name, date that you found the geocache, and a message in the logbook, where an infinite number of people will have noted their journey to the geocache before you. This is a new and fun way to mark your place in the human community, and there are geocaches to be found all across the United States and far beyond our borders. Due to its outdoors nature and the mass amount of geocaches available, it seems the perfect new pastime to suggest to our RV Extended Warranty customers.
The RVing crowd is certainly not new to the sense of community you get from partaking in adventures with, and in the footsteps of, people from all different walks of life. The ability motorhomers possess to travel far and often opens up an expanding world of geocaches to track down. If you travel with young children or grandchildren, or are an avid hiker, geocaching is a wonderful activity to incorporate into your cross-country RV journeys. Whether you stay within a mile of the motorhome campground or set out in your toad to find a far-off geocache, there is always adventure to be found and new things to learn. Some avid geocachers will even find hundreds within a single year! If you’re a full-time RVer…consider this a challenge!
Our office recently learned of the geocaching trend and we were immediately enthralled by the promise of fresh air and adventure it brings to the daily routine. When we searched for geocaches in the area we were pleasantly surprised to find around 30 within walking distance of our San Diego offices! It has become a common occurrence to find our team hunting down a geocache on lunch breaks as the short journey is a great way to enjoy the summer sunshine and get to know each other even better. Just this morning our Manager Stephanie, and Marketing Director Staci set out to find a geocache hidden just a few office buildings over. The geocache was placed by a 3-year-old battling Coronary Heart Disease, and it was a wonderful experience to find the container filled with small drawings and children’s toys, along with a logbook full of inspiration and encouraging words for the young boy who started the cache. So whether you’re looking for a way to stretch your legs on lunch breaks, or something fun to do when out on the road in your RV, geocaching is the perfect way to get in touch with nature, each other, and your fellow man
