From John:
Kathy and I are really just plain folks like you, but we live in a forty-foot RV instead of a house. Maybe we lost our minds a bit; but we’re happy we did. I am retired from the US Navy as well as a retired manufacturing Quality Manager. Kathy has worked extensively in the medical administrative field. We had travelled worldwide due to my naval service as well as locations on both coasts of our beautiful country. We would see the big bus conversions and Winnebago RV’s on the interstates and we both said, “one day that will be us”. We started dreaming in earnest in 2003, a year before my job was out sourced. We went to shows and visited dealerships just to see if we could really do this. We could. We took the plunge two years later after we sold our house in Florida and bought “The Dream Machine”, our 2004 Fleetwood Expedition diesel motor home. Since then we have travelled through the states we used to fly over and discovered a unique and awesomely beautiful land to which pictures do not do justice. We have now been fulltime RVers for over 12 years. We have crossed the country 5 times east-west and 3 times north-south. During our time on the road, we have workamped at many campgrounds and resorts and had a ball doing that.
Started on live radio on 2009, the Living the RV Dream podcast is about to surpass 400 1 hour shows centered on the RV lifestyle. We have an international fan-base where RVers and RV wannabes depend on us for relevant, useful RV information as well as an entertainment. Our friends at Geeks on Tour convinced us to start blogging and all our blogs are at that website as well. After we left live radio and started the podcast we started a little Facebook Group to promote the podcast that has blossomed to over 32,000 members with no end in sight.
Early in 2012, we started to get emails asking us to write a book. They said it was hard to dig through so many audio files to find the things we had talked about. Writing a book was the farthest thing from our minds, but when you receive more than a dozen emails in a month all asking the same thing, we knew we had to do it. Our first book, “So, You Want to be an RVer?” was written during a cross country trip that year. We received a lot of help and encouragement from our good friend, author and blogger Nick Russell of the Gypsy Journal. The following year we wrote “So, You Want to be a Workamper?” A visit to the Hershey RV show prompted us to do the Pamphlet “How to Survive an RV Show, and Have a Great Time Doing It”. These are all available on Amazon.com as eBooks. We totally rewrote “So, You Want to be an RVer?” with 40 new chapters and many images for release in 2016. Autographed paperback copies of the “So, you want to be…” books are available on our website in the store page.
Our website started around the same time as the Podcast. Originally it was mostly about our travels and podcast. That all changed in 2014 with a totally new format and emphasis on all that goes into this RV lifestyle. It is a continuous work in progress with over 110 web pages so far.
It was probably the same folks who asked for the book that started asking for a Living the RV Dream Rally. We’ve been to many RV rallies, and we wanted something a little more laid back and easy for folks to get to know one another. That was the premise for the 2015 Living the RV Dream Gathering where we had 50 rigs of happy campers. We were able to get some of our RV Guru friends to give seminars. We had The Geeks on Tour, TechnoRV, Greg Gerber of the RV Daily Report, and Al Hesselbart, formerly the historian at the RV/MH Hall of Fame help us put on a great show. Both presenters and attendees enjoyed it so much we will have a Gathering 2016 in Bradenton, FL in October.
This July we will publish the first edition of the Living the RV Dream monthly newsletter with stories and articles of interest to all RVers. There is a sign-up link on our website home page.
