Repair 7.5 KW Onan generator. Generator failed under load. First repair facility thought that the control module had failed. Took it to DJM who ascertained that stator had shed it magnets which caused both the stator and rotor to seize up. DJM replaced the rotor, stator and fan assembly.
DJM specializes in stand alone generator service and sales and had the expertise to quickly analyze the problem. Repair took quite a bit longer than originally anticipated since the replacement parts were not in stock and had to be manufactured by Onan. The repair cost was considerable, but understandable since the replacement components essentially make up the most of the generator. The unit was 13 years old and had about 400 hours on it when it failed. Hopefully it will last another 13 years. Probably will not run it when the ambient temperature is over 120 degrees F.
Damage to Coleman Air Conditioner.
I mistakenly entered a car wash with inadequate clearance and damaged my air conditioner on the roof of my Gulfstream motorhome. I explained to Malcolm that I was on the road and behind schedule. He and his team went to work and got me on the road in 2 1/2 hours. I was astounded. The work was done in a professional manner and the price was quite reasonable. If you are in the New Orleans area and need RV work, contact DJM FIRST. They are first-rate.
We located DJM Enterprises via internet as authorized repair facility for both Atwood & Thetford (our stove and macerator were the problems we were having).
After taking the coach in on the scheduled day, parts for the stove were ordered and work begun on the macerator.
The person working on the macerator had a total of a couple months experience working on RV’s. and none on macerator. The directions from Thetford was to check for debris accumulated on the chopper blades. Discovering debris here, the unit was cleaned and reassembled and we were charged for 2 hrs work @$105/hr. Arriving back at the park, I checked the flow-through of the pump, and nothing had changed except for a horrible leak around the seal to the motor. Taking the coach back the repair facility, I asked why the flow wasn’t checked since that was the problem I was having fixed. No comment on the testing of the work performed and “I didn’t touch that part” the response about the newly formed leak. In checking flow (and leak) their decision was a venting problem with the coach (again no testing to prove theory). Since no plumber was available (brother out of town) I was told to come back the next day. I took the coach back to the RV park, dismantled the pump and found the impeller blades literally falling apart. Took this part back to DJM to order new parts.
When parts arrived in a couple of days, found the same unqualified installer trying to reassemble new pump into old housing container. I got so frustrated watching the process, that I assembled and/or provided instructions (Teflon tape to be wrapped clockwise so proper seal is achieved, don’t forget the band clamp this time, etc.) For this we were charged an additional 1 hour of work. In short, work on the stove, good, actually better than the work Newmar performed 3 weeks earlier. Work on the macerator, total incompetence by unqualified people charging obscene rates based on the work performed.
