For those RVers who are still in the workforce, news of an approaching 3-day weekend can kick into gear the desire to getaway. Some of the best motorhome trips are last-minute, so we created a helpful checklist to get you on your way for the 3-day weekend:
The working condition of your RV will be the first and final factor that decides whether or not you can retreat for the weekend. We recommend a road-worthy check of the rig, which takes a look at your coach’s tire pressure, engine oil, break lights, head lights, etc. It is also important to check your propane tank, refrigerator, and generator.
The most important part of planning a quick trip is figuring out the destination! Pick a spot 1-4 hours away, depending on how much time you want to spend on the road. If a campground sparks interest, first check the weather and then proceed with research on availability and fees.
Keep in mind the length of your trip, and only pack for the weekend. Make sure to bring the essentials, such as toiletries, first-aid kit, and any prescriptions. Refer back to your weather findings and determine which types of clothing are necessary. Other items to keep in mind are fresh linens, flashlights, and a map if needed.
Your short weekend trip shouldn’t be bogged down by washing dishes, so invest some time in preparing food ahead. Breakfast can be simplified by making pancake batter or omelette mix at home, putting the mixture in a zip lock bag, and freezing. Lunch ideas include making a batch of tuna, pasta, or chicken salad or the classic deli sandwich, which you can also make at home and freeze! Don’t forget about dinner, and know that you can rest easy with the variety of recipes you can freeze and reheat, such as pasta bakes, enchiladas, and soup!
Congratulations, you’ve made it to the weekend and all is ready to go! Make a traffic check before you leave and map alternative routes if necessary. Do a quick scan of your rig and make sure everything’s working to ensure safe travels. Take one last look at your motorhome inventory and the relaxing weekend can finally begin.
