We think it’s safe to say that technology has certainly made our lives easier! As RVers, often traveling long distances and in unfamiliar places, we’ll take all the help we can get. One of the most informational and handy things we have right at our fingertips is apps! We’re talking about easy-to-use and easy to download cell phone applications that can be used just about anywhere you have service. In this blog, we’ll show you our favorite apps for RV camping, campgrounds, BLM land, and more!
FreeRoam
If you love boondocking or are trying to cut down on travel expenses, FreeRoam is the free app for you! FreeRoam is a non-profit focused on helping people enjoy nature in a respectful, sustainable way. On this app, you’ll also be able to find nearby dump sites, freshwater, cell towers, propane, and groceries. Additionally, you can also find free overnight parking locations like Walmart or other retailers. If you’re curious about campgrounds or have questions, you can also message other users on the app.
Harvest Hosts
Do you like RVing, wineries, breweries, and distilleries all in that order? This app might be the end-
all, be-all for you! With your Harvest Hosts membership, you can actually stay overnight and camp in unique places like these. With an affordable yearly membership, you can stay at unlimited locations with no camping fees. With an easy app download, you will have access to over 2,000 amazing farms, museums, golf courses, and more! While the app may be free to download, you will need a membership to receive its perks.
RV Life
RV Life is another great app to find campgrounds. This app has just about every private RV park available. They are also integrated with RV Trip Wizard. This means you’ll be able to map out your trip and drive, all in the same app! Like any other great app, there are a lot of users that are able to leave reviews, ratings, and photos. A great way to learn from your fellow RV traveler!
Hipcamp
If you’re looking for an elevated or curated way of camping, Hipcamp is for you! On this app or website, you’ll be able to find RV parks, cabins, treehouses, and glamping. Hipcamp is said to be the Airbnb of camping, and we agree! Hipcamp works to support those who care for the land and get more people out under the stars and in nature.
Truck Map
If your rig is a big fifth-wheel or is around 13 feet tall, we know that clearance is always on your mind while hauling. You will need an app that will help you navigate through and around low clearance bridges. Truck Map is free and easy to use. Additionally, you can also find CAT scales along the way to keep your RV weight in check. For the importance of your RV weight and why it matters, check this blog out!
All Trails
If you’re an RVer, you’re most likely the outdoorsy type. All Trails is a fantastic app for finding hiking trails around you. This app will tell you the distance, elevation, difficulty level, ratings & reviews, and photos! With a variety of filters, you can also bring your dog along on certain trails.
Open Signal
Not everywhere you go will offer great signal or cell reception. Being connected is important for safety reasons. If you are a remote worker on the road, this app will be essential. You don’t want to arrive at your destination, only to find out you won’t be able to connect and work. If you need to find a nearby location with a signal, Open Signal is where to go.
My Radar
The weather is more important than you think! If you’re a full-time RVer, the weather can make a big impact on your travel decisions. Safety out on the road is our biggest priority and it should be yours too! Depending on your location, it’s important to be on alert for possible storms, hurricanes, or snowstorms. Check out MyRadar for your weather app needs.
Gas Buddy
Savings on gas can go a long way! With Gas Buddy, you are able to see all nearby gas or diesel stations and their price. You don’t have to make a lucky guess on how much you’ll be spending when you fill-up. You can also sign up to receive rewards and get cashback. This app can also calculate trip costs, track a fuel logbook, provide fuel insights, and alert you of vehicle recalls.
Using helping tools like apps can make traveling easier and less stressful. Using a variety of technological tools can also teach you things you didn’t know before and help you connect with other RVers doing the same thing you are! Do you have any must-have apps? Share which ones you recommend in the comments below!
